“Do this again! I want to see more. I'm much more inspired to do this once I see it in action. It's far less intimidating.” -- A comment from a Greenway Elementary teacher coming out of the BSD Future Ready team’s first illuminatED event.
Since 2015, the Future Ready team has hosted learning “Summits” that brought hundreds of teachers together for professional development. illuminatED was born when someone wondered “What if instead of bringing the teachers to the Summit, we bring the Summit to the school?”
illuminatED is designed to leverage early release Wednesdays and flood a school with innovative ideas, lessons, and excitement. The full day immersion spotlights new classroom lessons and teacher development with a Future Ready and technology integration focus.
At Greenway, teachers chose from a menu of technology infused lessons, then district innovation strategists came in and taught those lessons to all grades. Activities included empathy centered design, coding and robotics, filmmaking, paper circuits, and using the Future Bus as a Gravitram. Classroom teachers observed and joined in the lessons in their own building alongside their teaching teams.
After the school day, the staff used professional development time to reflect, ask questions, and plan how to incorporate what they learned into future classes. In one day, every student was taught a Future Ready lesson and every teacher was supported by the Future Ready Team.
One Greenway teacher had this to say, “Amazing. At every moment, all students were engaged and thinking even without something in their hands. There were no dull moments! Dendrites were growing!”
Next up for illuminatED: Nancy Ryles, William Walker, and McKinley this year and plans to expand to more schools next year. Contact your school’s Future Ready Innovation Strategist for details, or hop over to the illuminatED page here on our site.
