A guest blog post: Kayla Bell, principal at Nancy Ryles elementary reflecting on the Future Ready illuminatED experience on Wednesday April 4.
Today we got to participate in IlluminatED. What an engaging experience! Every elementary school NEEDS to have this event brought to their school.
Today, students in grades K-5 had the opportunity to participate in a one hour hands on activities that promote collaboration, innovation and higher level thinking skills. Students got to experience something new and my teachers had the opportunity to check out a variety of different lessons and materials that they can use in their classrooms. The engagement was school wide.
What did we do today? The list is long…
Engineering and Design
Dot and Dash
And the FUTURE BUS!!!!
I got to spend the day in classrooms watching kids experience something new and watch them imagine and create. I loved their sense of wonder. On the way to lunch, a kindergartener stopped me and told me she got to build a robot today. She told me it was super cool!!! I can only imagine the dinner conversation tonight.
I also had time to engage in conversations with my staff about what they were seeing. Many commented that they had heard about some of these items, like Ozobots, but they had no idea what they were or how it could relate to the classroom and the targets. Today, they were able to make the connections.
During our Wednesday collaboration time, the Innovation Strategists worked with my teachers to deepen their understanding of the materials used, how to access them, and how to connect the tools/materials to targets, and classroom learning. Every team left our training today with their next step to help students innovate and design something new. Empowering!!
And finally, we had fourth and fifth grade students participate in a videography class this morning at 8 am. They were armed with cameras and they captured the day. Colin Elliot (on Pep’s Team) put this video together at the end of the day. We are excited to share it with our community. You can view our video HERE:
I hope you have the opportunity to attend one of these IlluminatED sessions and experience the joy and wonder yourselves.
